Matala
Matala is located approx 70km from Iraklio (the capital of Crete) and 10km south west of Phaistos. This lively seaside town was once the ancient port of Phaistos and later Gortys, and ruins of the ancient city are still visible in the sea. This area of coastline is most known for its artificial caves, used is tombs. During the 60´s and 70´s Matala was the meeting place of the "flower children" and the caves hosted hippy communes. Famous people such as Cat Stevens stayed there (today the caves are protected by the Archaeological Service of Crete) Matala bay has a sandy beach, and many tavernas, owing to its exceptional beauty it is one of the best known summer resorts of Crete.
